Voters Concerned with Lack of Notice of Upcoming Port Election

BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Some voters are concerned that there had been not enough public notice about the Port Commissioner Candidate filing deadline coming up February 16, including Mary Helen Flores with Citizens Against Voter Abuse.

“We really want these elections to be open to everyone,” Flores said.

“We’ve had concerns with the Port of Brownsville election, being that the information for the filing deadline was not posted on their website or anywhere else that we could find,” she said, adding that the Port’s election cycle needs to be posted because they have a different cycle than city and district elections.

“It’s up to the Port to announce when their filing deadline is for candidates to file to run for office. This allows more people to be able to participate in their process,” Flores said.

When informed about the concerns, Patty Gonzales, Director of Communications for the Port of Brownsville said protocol is being followed.

“The Brownsville Navigation District Commissioners voted to order the election that is one of the first steps you have to take. On [February 8] we have a dedicated page on our website related to election materials. Right now it has a notice of filing deadline, it has the precincts and it also has some of the polling places,” Gonzales said.

Adding that the law requires that the notice of filing deadline be posted on a public building where the Port has an office, and that the notice has only been posted at the entrance of the gated building and the Port’s Command Center on Indiana Avenue since December 7.

“We did not post it on social media, however that was really just an oversight on our part. We welcome suggestions from our citizens about how we can be better. It’s not legally required, but if someone would’ve called we would’ve said okay,” she said.

Flores is relieved the notice is now posted on the Port’s website, however, she believes it’s too close to the February 16 deadline.

The Port has a contract with Cameron County for election services and is partnering with Texas Southmost College for polling places and judges.
