Victims Identified In Fatal Towing Crash Near Sunrise Mall

Brownsville, TX - Brownsville Police have identified Santiago Zarate (84) and Maria del Carmen Mares (59) as the two deceased victims in a towing crash near Sunrise Mall in Brownsville. "A male and female were using a white ford Expedition to pull a red ford focus with a rope. At one point the rope connecting the vehicles broke off causing the vehicles to stop on the left lane of the frontage road. Initial information indicates that both subjects were attempting to reconnect the vehicles and were working in-between the vehicles." said Brownsville Police in media release.

A white Chevrolet Z-71 Truck "turned onto the left lane in an attempt to try to merge into the expressway when he struck the stopped vehicles. The driver reported not seeing the vehicles stopped until it was too late and despite his efforts to avoid a collision, he struck the red ford focus with his truck. The collision pushed the Focus forward striking both male and female and causing their deaths."

The crash remains under investigation.
