Valley AIDS Council Hosts Bi-National Event on World AIDS Day

BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Not only is today the first day of December, but it’s also World Aids Day.

The Valley AIDS Council hosted a bi-national event with the Mexican State of Tamaulipas, to discuss issues and provide better treatment and care for people living with HIV, and those at risk on both sides of the border.

“One of the important and beautiful things about this meeting is because we share patients. A lot of times people that we see at the Westbrook clinic they see in [Tamaulipas] because they either have family over there or they travel back-and-forth,” said Wally Cantu, Valley AIDS Council CEO.

“Improving the collaboration and communication between the two entities is always better for the patients and this is a very important and beautiful thing that's happening here,” Cantu said.

There are a little over 2,000 people living with HIV in the Valley, every year a little over 200 hundred cases are added.

A growing proportion of that new case load has been among the 13-24-year-old patients.

At the bi-national event, people who passed away from HIV were honored, and those who live with HIV were supported.
