TxDOT and the Multi Million Dollar Traffic Plan

PHARR, Texas - Growth in the Rio Grande Valley continues to climb. While the increase in population is good for the economy, there are downfalls, like more traffic congestion.

But a multi-million dollar allocation is making it possible for improvements on one of the most congested areas in Hidalgo County.

Mission Resident Andres Zuniga said, "This is one of the things that we need. More infrastructure and more roads, because it's hard to believe but every day you see more traffic and more traffic."

Like many valley residents, Andres Zuniga uses the Expressway 83/281 Interchange to get from Point A  to Point B. But every day traveling on the expressway becomes a pain.

"Basically I have to plan my day because if I want to drive on the expressway between 4:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., it is a mess."

The average driver sits in traffic at the interchange for as much as 15 minutes during peak hours.
But a new $150 million project, is expected to help alleviate some of the congestion.

Octavio Saenz - TxDOT Spokesperson said, "You have a single lane connector from either interstate to the other. That's going to be broadened to two lane directors."

While more lanes will ease traffic flow at the intersection, TxDOT officials say adding new roads will prepare Hidalgo County to house more than a million people over the next few years.

Octavio Saenz, "I think we also need to add capacity by creating additional corridors, such as the State Highway 68."

Like all road projects, TxDOT will be holding a public meeting over the next month to discuss project ideas with the public. For now there is no word on when construction will start. TxDOT is working quickly to bring this project to life.
