Spring Break Hit & Run Driver Pleads Not Guilty, More Charges Added

Brownsville, TX - KVEO News Center 23's Derick Garcia captured the sobering moments of Spring Break as teens received emergency medical care minutes after being hit by a car on March 17th. The alleged driver, Sugar Land, TX native, 20, Daisy Joy Decker. According to South Padre Island Police Chief Randy Smith, Decker was traveling north on Gulf Blvd and veered into the pedestrian/bicycle lane and struck,19, Maria Selena Patino and Secilia Leija along with other Spring Breakers. Six people were struck, two suffered serious injuries, Patino died from her injuries.

Nine months later, on December 6th, Decker faced Judge Gloria Rincones, in the 445th District Court. Decker plead not guilty to nine charges, including Second Degree Manslaughter, three felony charges of Accident Involving Injury and Accident Involving Serious Bodily Injury, The State of Texas filed three addition charges of Intoxicated Manslaughter with a Vehicle, Accident Involving Death and Intoxicated Assault with a Vehicle Causing Serious Bodily Injury. 

Following the arraignment, attorney Ernesto Gamez, escorted Decker to Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center to be booked and post bond on the three additional charges, before released, Judge Rincones issued a stern warning, if you fail to report there right now, I will have you arrested."

No court date has been set at this time.
