Social Media Campaign Aims to Save Lives

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TX - Every day for the past 16 years someone has died on Texas roads.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is raising awareness of this deadly streak.

Every day after November 7th of 2000, a person has died on Texas roads. TxDOT is rolling out their #EndtheStreakTX campaign. With this, they hope to raise awareness about this issue and its fatal consequences.

Octavio Saenz, public information officer for the Texas Department of Transportation, says, “These accidents and deaths that occur on Texas roadways are 100 percent preventable. Because the majority of them because distracted driving, intoxicated driving or people not obeying basic rules of traffic.”

Driving is among the most dangerous activities people do on a daily basis. Whether it’s looking down at a text message or searching for the perfect song, those seconds spent away from the road can mean the difference between life and death.

“When you have a radio, a smartphone, you’re painting your nails, doing something else besides driving, you fail to realize you have basically a battering ram that weighs hundreds of pounds,” says Saenz

An estimated 3,500 people die each year on Texas roads. South Padre Island has a population of about 3,000 people. Imagine the entire population disappears one day. Now imagine that same amount of people gone every year for the past 16 years.

“We’re not adding safety requirements, we’re adapting to the current environment that we have on the roadways,” says Saenz.

TxDOT is asking drivers to be safe on the roads. They ask the public to share #endthestreak on social media, on their pages, pictures or status to make other aware of the issue.  The goal is to save as many lives as possible.

So far there is 3167 deaths on Texas roads this year.

TxDOT asks that you drive safely during this upcoming holiday season.
