BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Pro education groups in Brownsville are trying to end the unpaid internship.
The All-In-Internship Program aims to promote paid internship among college students. Brownsville groups raised $235,000 for 90 paid internships. This program is open for students at Texas Southmost College and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
Post Secondary Success Coordinator at United Way of Southern Cameron County Blanca Davila says, “We’re trying to embrace the paid internship culture here in Brownsville. And we found that our students need some experience in their major or their program while they’re in school. So they can persist, stay in college, and then graduate college so they can they can transition into a living wage employment.”
The program is ongoing all year. Applications are still open. Partners in this program are: United Way of Southern Cameron County, Workforce Solutions Cameron, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, Brownsville Chamber of Commerce, Brownsville Economic Development Council, Texas Southmost College.
