"Please Begin Preparing Your Property", SPI Officials Warn

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas - The City of South Padre Island has issued a warning due to the threat of heavy rain at the end of the week.

Harvey will enter the Gulf of Mexico soon and likely become a tropical storm once again. Island officials are urging residents to "begin preparing property."

Preparations are underway in South Padre Island. The storm once known as Tropical Storm Harvey is gaining momentum and coming to south Texas. It may not. Either way city officials are asking residents to plan ahead.

The National Weather Service expects the storm to redevelop into a depression in the upcoming days.
The city sent out an alert through the new emergency alert system stating, “Please begin preparing your property.” We reached out to emergency response expert and SPI Fire Chief Doug Fowler for more information.

“We're taking the opportunity to test the system and let people know that weather is approaching and we want people to take proper precautions.”

High winds can pose a major safety concern. Chief Fowler asks residents to have a plan. Some residents already starting to prepare. At city hall, island residents are picking up hurricane vehicle registration stickers.

“We are making sure that our facilities are hardened, are ready for heavy rainfall and for the wind. We're making sure that our staff is prepared.” Said Chief Fowler.

Forecasters are on high alert and the watching storm. The National Weather Service Station in Brownsville says that despite not issuing a warning yet, they do agree with the city's preparedness alert.

Currently the city is not handing out sand bags but they are asking residents to sign up for Swift 9-1-1. It's an Emergency Alert System that gives you notifications as they occur to either a phone number or an email.
