Philanthropist Donates $100,000 To Border City College

HARLINGEN, Texas - South Texas is in need of science, technology, engineering and math careers.

Over four hundred students who are pursuing a career in the STEM field will benefit from a large donation from Brownsville native Mike Hernandez, founder of the Hernandez Foundation and education philanthropist.

Hernandez presented Texas State Technical College with a $100,000 check for TSTC’s Texan Success Scholarship. These scholarship funds will be awarded to students from Brownsville who are pursuing a STEM career.

“Everything that we're trying to do starts with education,” Hernandez told a group of spectators at a presentation. “Without education, we can't recruit the companies, we can't have a trained workforce that we need in order to recruit the companies that are going to provide the good paying jobs.”

Texas State Technical College said it will match the amount donated, which will provide financial assistance to students pursuing a certificate or associate degree from the college.

The scholarship is used toward tuition or other expenses, and is expected to help 400 students.
