Low-Cost Internet Now Available to Residents in McAllen Who Qualify

MCALLEN, Texas - In a digital age, immediate access to the internet is not just a luxury, but more of a necessity. That's why McAllen's Independent School District and city officials are teaming up to bring internet services, to families of low income.

"It's a $5 and $10 program. It's available where ever AT&T services are at, so that's important, and they're not all over the city,” said McAllen Mayor Jim Darling. “So we'll identify those as we go along and hopefully work on another solution for that. At five and ten dollars, it's relatively affordable," he added.

Families who are part of the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) are eligible for this service. Right now, nearly 72% of McAllen families are considered low socio-economic.

"We identify around 8000 houses and about 12,000 students, so a significant part of McAllen ISD that doesn't have internet, so hopefully we get all 8000 houses on board," said Darling.

The goal of this new joint venture between McAllen and the school district, is to make learning easier at home for the students.

"This is going to give them the opportunity to use internet, especially those kids that don't have Wifi at their house for research purposes, and to do a better and creative job on their devices when doing their homework," said McAllen ISD IT Director, Ann Vega.

The students' parents will also benefit.

"This is going to give them the opportunity to use their child's device to access the internet for job applications or look for openings, or anything like that,” said Vega.

The program for low cost internet services, is set to expire in three years. Mayor Darling plans on extending that time, and even add more households to it.
