If Tropical Wave Harvey is Severe, BISD May Ask Staff to Stay Home Thursday and Friday

BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Brownsville Independent School District Superintendent Esperanza Zendejas is working with county officials to make sure the district is available in case there is any need for the buildings to serve as shelters.

“At this point in time we understand the storm is coming Thursday and Friday and we are here to support the community as a district,” Esperanza told News Center 23’s Marlane Rodriguez.

Teachers returned to school on August 21, and students return on August 28.

If the storm is severe, Zendejas said schools may be closed.

“At this point in time we do not have enough information as to how severe the storm will be hitting us. Depending on the situation, if the storm was extremely severe, we may ask that the staff stay home and not report to school that day,” she said.

“But at this point in time we can't make this call until probably Thursday, and if we do we will inform all the schools and all of our staff,” Zendejas said, adding that the district is ready to make any necessary decisions to ensure the safety of the staff.
