Hidalgo County Officially Opposing SB4

HIDALGO COUNTY, Texas - Hidalgo County Commissioners are the latest Rio Grande Valley governing body to join the fight against the Sanctuary City Law.

On Tuesday, August 22nd, Commissioners Court voted unanimously for an Amicus brief after receiving overwhelming support from the community.

"We're very proud of Hidalgo County for being responsive to the needs of the community." Said Gabriela Zavala with Equal Voices Network.

The resolution’s passage against Senate Bill 4 is a symbolic message from the county to the cities currently in litigation. The community hopes the resolution helps in stopping the law from going into effect September 1, 2017

"Children not wanting to go to school, parents being afraid to take them. People not wanting to go see their doctor. People afraid to even go grocery shopping. We're seeing anxiety, fear, the loss of money to several businesses in our community." Said Amber Arriaga-Salinas with Proyecto Azteca.

In previous reports with News Center 23, Rio Grande Valley lawmakers have called on city councils, commissioners and other influential figures to speak out against the law. Democratic Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa doesn’t believe law enforcement can uphold the law without prejudice. While on the Senate Floor in May, Sen. Hinojosa sited Arizona’s efforts to enforce a similar law but was found discriminatory, “There was a sheriff who was lawless. Went beyond what the law required. We have and could have potential problems here in Texas, as some of the sheriffs who may go beyond the authority that they think they have to enforce immigration laws.”

Under the law, an officer or any licensed peace officer can ask for immigration status under lawful detention and penalizes communities for not adhering to immigration detainers even though federal law allows gives local law enforcement agencies the ability to deny compliance of a detainer.
