Donna Man Found Guilty in Connection with Capital Murder Case

EDINBURG, Texas - A jury has found a Donna man guilty of aggravated robbery in connection to a 2015 double murder.

23-year-old Victor Javier Briseño was sentenced to five years probation, Thursday afternoon.

The defendant was charged with capital murder for the death of 23-year-old Victor Reyes on April 14, 2015.

WHAT HAPPENED:

According to testimony from the lead investigator in the case, Briseño stated he and three men drove to the victim's home to purchase synthetic marijuana. Two of the men, 38-year-old Ramon (Monchis) Vasquez and 18-year old Luis Estrada got out of the vehicle and proceeded toward the victim. Vasquez had a firearm by his side, as he allegedly wanted to rob the victim. Briseño says he heard gunshots coming from the residence several minutes later. Hidalgo County Sheriff Deputies pronounced Reyes dead at the scene.

Shortly after the shooting, Briseño asked his brother, Juan Mendiola, to drive Vasquez, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds, to the hospital. After Mendiola refused, the defendant called another friend, Carlos De La Fuente for a ride. Briseño and De La Fuente dropped Vasquez off at a local hospital where he later died.

Estrada also suffered gunshot wounds, but survived the shooting.

THE PUNISHMENT:

In addition to his five years of probation, Briseño was ordered to stay away from the victim's family. He must also serve 40 hours of community service, and get his G.E.D.
