Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Announces New Forensic Exam Unit

EDINBURG, Texas - Doctors Hospital at Renaissance is announcing a new Forensic Exam Unit for abuse and sexual assault victims in the Rio Grande Valley. Hospital officials say this is something that had been in the works for more than a year now. But with the recent closure of the same unit at Mission Hospital. They said starting the program as soon as possible became a priority.

Forensic program coordinator Evonne Garcia, "We are 24/7. This is our full-time job. So, we're not working in the ER or taking calls on the side or leaving the ER to come take are of these patients. So, we have that time to spend with the patient. Because sometimes these exams can take anywhere from one hour to four or five hours. So, we actually have the opportunity to sit and not rush them and spend the time we need to with them."

Garcia says the hospital plans to expand the program to work with child and elder abuse victims in the future. The new Safe Haven program will be officially open in a couple of weeks. But doctors and nurses say they will not turn away anyone who is seeking help.
