Colonia Residents Urge County Commissioners To Approve New Model Subdivision Rules

EDINBURG, Texas - Residents of colonias are urging Hidalgo County Commissioners to approve new subdivision rules.

The new Model Subdivision Rules will provide new unincorporated neighborhoods with infrastructure for streetlights. It ensures that no future subdivisions are built without street lights. The new MSR’s will also provide better drainage systems for subdivisions.

County Commissioners have been considering the new rules for over a year, but haven't adopted them. All that can change, if county leadership changes after elections next year.

Stephanie Rojas, Community Organizer said, "This is definitely something that will bring a little bit more of assurance to the colonia residents living in those conditions like flood waters for weeks, or living in darkness without street lights, and not being able to go out past 6:00 p.m. now. This is something everyone wants, including the commissioners. Luckily they've been very supportive of this. It's just now setting in stone and putting it in writing."

Colonia residents expect county commissioners to officially approve the new model subdivision rules by the end of the year.
