Closing Digital Divide

BROWNSVILLE, Texas - One local school district is trying to close the digital divide by distributing computer tablets to all fifth-grade students.

Brownsville Independent School District is ensuring all students have access to technology tools, and scheduling meetings with parents and students to ensure they learn about the valuable educational resources found in each tablet.

“The tablets are going to be taken home every day, they'll be brought back to campus, they're going to be doing their work having to do with reading and writing,” said Ricardo Torres, Champion Elementary School Principal.

“They're able to log onto the Internet because they have 100% Internet through a company BISD has purchased,” he said.

More than 3,000 tablets will be distributed to fifth graders. Champion Elementary was the first school to receive their tablets. And students were all smiles!
