Border Wall Could Divide Worshippers from Historic Church

Priest Calls the Wall is Offensive, Obscene and Obnoxious

MISSION, Texas - One of the reasons people are rallying August 12 is buried deep in history and culture.

La Lomita Mission, built in the late 1800s, is a historic and important site to many, and it could possibly be on the other side of the border wall.

“It was a symbol and beginning of the town of Mission,” said Father Roy Snipes, a priest at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mission.

Although more than 150 years old, people still attend mass at La Lomita. To enter the church property, visitors must drive through a levee, used to control floods. The border wall could possibly be built on the levee.

“I have to get a ladder to say mass,” Snipes told News Center 23’s Marlane Rodriguez in an interview.

The church leases about three or four acres from a rancher for church camp, Snipes worries worshipers will not be able to attend camp anymore.

“I know we need to be protected and defended but we wouldn't want our government to become arrogant and cruel on the pretext that they were protecting us,” the priest said.

Father Roy believes acts of terrorism and drug violence, which is cited as the main reasons for a border wall, would happen with or without a wall, adding that it is offensive, obscene and obnoxious.

“Some of the things that the president has said about building a wall, I don't know how he could say those things,” Snipes said. “That the people on the other side of the [Rio Grande River] who are our neighbors and relatives are rapists and killers and drug dealers, well there’s rapists and killers and drug dealers everywhere you don't have to be on the other side of the river to find that.”

The rally is hosted by an alliance of groups, who will finish their march at La Lomita.
