HARLINGEN, Texas - Today a former Cameron County Judge and beloved public figure, will be laid to rest.
Moises Vela was a Harlingen native and returned to the city to establish a law practice and serve as a municipal court judge.
A middle school in Harlingen is named after the patriarch, which he would visit on occasion.
Although a respected public servant, his family, including Congressman Filemon Vela, see him differently.
“He was a lawyer, he was a county judge, but for us he was just an uncle,” Vela told News Center’s Marlane Rodriguez.
“He was my godfather and like a second father, he was such a wonderful man, he was full of life. He told you what he thought and he would give you the shirt off his back,” Vela said.
“We are going to miss him,” he said, visibly emotional.
On behalf of RGV Proud we thank Judge Moises Vela for his service and offer our condolences to his family, including News Center 23’s Derrick Garcia.
