Back To School With Ariel

HARLINGEN,Texas - The first day of school may be nerve wracking for some but not for a furry four-legged friend.

Ariel the white poodle is returning as part of the staff for the eight-consecutive year at Dr. Hesiquio Rodriguez Elementary in Harlingen.

She is a certified therapy dog that can detect if a person is stressed or if a child has low sugar levels.

As soon as she detects this she will quickly comfort or alert an adult to address the issue.

Her handler Norlene Chamberlin is a counselor at the same school and together they bring joy to the students that may be having a bad day.

Ariel has a different routine everyday but something she doesn’t miss out on is physical education classes, visits children during lunch hour and stops by the classrooms of autism and special education children during a difficult moment to make them laugh.

Chamberlin recommends other school districts to consider the idea of having a therapy dog available.

She also comments that it has changed the lives of many children and hopes to continue bringing happiness to those that may need it.
