Art Exhibit Of Survivors of Sexual Assault

MCALLEN,Texas - South Texas College currently displays “ What were You Wearing” to raise awareness on sexual assault.

“The exhibit is called what were you wearing it is to dispel what we call the rape culture and this idea of what we call victim blaming” said Jennifer Bryson Clark an Associate Professor of Political Science.

“Too often the question, ‘What were you wearing?’, is asked of survivors of sexual assault,” said Clark. “It implies that the survivor could have prevented their assault if they had worn something less revealing.”

The display shows clothes, shoes and a brief sentence of what occurred while in those clothes.

The exhibit is co- sponsored by many local agency such as Mujeres Unidas, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Criminal Justice Department, Fuerza Del Valle, Student Activities, and the Sociology Club.

These agencies along with the authorities, want to help those that may be going through a similar situation and are urging women, males and children to speak up.

The display will be available until Friday February 23 at the Pecan Campus.
